The Skypool is a 25-meter-long swimming pool, located extraordinarily between two buildings at the 10^th floor, 35 meters up. Formed from 14 pieces of invisibly-joined solid acrylic, the pool allows swimmers to look directly down to the ground below.

Designed by London-based HAL architects, the structure was conceived with a sense of fun, to give users a “swim like no other”. While during the shoot I was unfortunately not able to try it out, I suspect the architect has achieved the aim in this respect!

Engineering was completed by Eckersley O’Callaghan, and fabrication by Reynolds Polymer Technology, utilising 360mm thick acrylic along the bottom, and 180mm thick for the sides. The engineering allows the rigid pool to stay level and not under stress while allowing for the differential movement of its independent supporting structures.

The refractive index of acrylic is very close to that of water, which helps to create the look of water floating weightlessly in the air.
