HOPKINS ARCHITECTS
London-based practice Hopkins Architects completed this new-build structure for Brighton College in Kemptown, Sussex, having successfully won a limited competition. The design responds to and complements its context of historic Grade 2 listed structures, replacing a number of outdated buildings previously residing in its location, with stone and brick facades and timber louvres over the fully glazed gable ends.
The roof is of zinc and features beautiful undulations, and the structure provides 22 new classrooms and generous social circulation spaces. The stair is a central feature of the design both conceptually and geometrically, featuring a stunning sculptural timber and steel balustrade, and rooflights to the atrium above, set in feature timber panelling.
