Mawson Kerr Architects
Architectural photography of the Grimes Graves Visitors Centre, by Mawson Kerr Architects.
Set in Norfolk’s Breckland Heath, this stunning pavilion provides interpretation space and access into a 4500-year-old mine.
Because the site is both a Scheduled Ancient Monument and an SSSI, the building needed to tread lightly on the ground.
The result is a circular timber pavilion that appears to ‘float’ above the pit, with a gently sloping ramp offering inclusive access and a feeling of descending through time. The design uses low-carbon materials, needs no heating, and can be entirely removed from the site at the end of its life.
A worthy winner of multiple awards…
